The VGEC Lab conducts research in
understanding hair cell regeneration in the vestibular system. There
are currently three proposed mechanisms to the reformation and/or
regeneration of hair cells. Listed on the right are examples of each
mechanism. |

retract from apical membrane and undergo repair
Hair cell proliferation followed by
differentiation
cells undergo a necessary
mitotic step before forming new hair cells
Transdifferentiation
surrounding
supporting cells directly convert into new hair cells
