Dr. Honrubia is the Director of the Victor Goodhill Center. His Human Vestibular Laboratory was awarded a "five + five"
grant, "Otoneurologic and Vestibular clinical and Basic Research" by the National Institutes of Health. This represents one of six
centers in the nation and the only one in vestibular science recognized by the National Institutes of Health. The laboratory
conducts physiological and anatomical studies concerning the vestibular system.
Anatomo-physiological correlations are made
between the morphological and physiological characteristics of individual neurons in the vestibular nerve as well as a study of the
topography and organization of the innervation in the vestibular receptors in animals. The anatomy of the vestibular nuclei is also
being investigated in primates and rodents. This includes studies in humans and monkeys, with computer-based
three-dimensional reconstruction techniques used to develop descriptions and models of the central nervous system pathways of
the vestibular nuclei. Physiological studies also include investigation of the
vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal reflexes in
animals and humans and the evaluation of the effects of inner ear lesions on these reflexes. Of note is that Dr. Honrubia's
laboratory has "mapped" the vestibular nuclei in humans. This is only the second such paper to be written (the first was written
20 years ago) on this subject. Dr. Honrubia also has a training grant that is used to help undergraduate students, medical
students and post-M.D.'s in their research training.
